BULLRUN 2013: TEAM TEXAS READY TO HEAT THINGS UP!

Six years ago we saw one of Bullrun’s most favorite teams pull up to the start line in Calgary with wide eyes, not knowing what to expect. Now, six rallies later, they’re a yearly staple that are so engrained with the rally that we couldn’t imagine a Bullrun rally without them.

Team Texas is made up of three sisters: Danielle, the older sister, and Nicole and Christina, identical twins, from Dallas, TX. The three of them form the formidable Team Texas.

Though they’ve got plenty of stories to share, these sisters have two Bullrun moments that will stick with them forever. “The first being the 2009 rally when we stopped in Destin, Florida and put 29 people in the back of our Roush F150. We all got caught by the cops and they tried to paddy wagon us all to jail,” Nicole said.

Fortunately, the police were baffled by the incident and didn’t even know what to do. They were fans of the rally and let the Bullrunners go. The second moment that the Texas sisters remember fondly was on last year’s rally when “the Dudesons locked us in the closet of their hotel room in Portland, Oregon. We called the front desk from our phones in the closet, security came up, Dudesons got escorted from the hotel.”

Now that’s ingenuity! Those Dudesons should have known better than to mess with Team Texas! They always have a backup plan!

Last year, Team Texas and Team Wu formed an alliance and rode together in the Border Patrol Van. Though onlookers might question bringing a passenger van on a road rally, it actually worked quite well for the Wu/Texas duo.

“Last year we definitely took a different approach, after 5 years of rallying and never being able to really enjoy certain routes and stops, so we decided to just enjoy ourselves with the Wu’s,” Nicole said. “We stirred up trouble and it was a nice change, but let’s face it, we are meant to be behind the wheel and this year we will be back behind the wheel in full action!”

Last year that van was party central – in fact, it was more of a zoo. It was never a dull moment inside the van. Of course, with the Wu’s in the van things can sometimes get a bit crazy. Team Texas went as far as giving Bill an Adderall just to keep him quiet for a few hours so they could catch their breath!

This year, the sisters from Texas will not be riding with the Wu’s, but will rather be taming the road on their own once again. In 2011 the sisters were behind the wheel of a white Mercedes. When asked what they would be driving this year, the very typical Team Texas answer was given: “As far as a car, we are just going to pull the Team Texas tradition and cross our fingers and hope the car fairy puts one on the line for us.”

It’s been a running joke that Team Texas shows up to Bullrun without a car. In fact, they only showed up with a car one year, when they first entered Bullrun in their supercharged Chevy Tahoe with an LS1 motor. Every year since they’ve relied on the mysterious car fairy to magically make a car appear for them at the start line. But whatever their secret is, it works!

Six years ago, Danielle, Nicole and Christina would have said their strongest asset was the fact that they are sisters and know what to expect from one-another. Now the fact that they have done Bullrun for six years means that they know what to expect more than anyone else. With the Texas trio being some of Bullrun’s longest-standing teams, they have some advice for the new Bullrunners this year:

1. Never underestimate your opponent.

2. It’s your first year, you’re not as badass as you think you are.

3. Careless driving is for 16 year-old boys.

4. The hotel room walls are thin, so the person you line up with the next morning can hear everything you said about them last night.

5. The right lane is the slow lane, wave to us when we pass you on the left.

Q&A with Team Texas:

1. How did you originally hear about Bullrun?

Back in 2008, a guy that goes by the name of Richard Rawlings told us about this car rally that he had been involved in for years. That year they were actually looking for an all girls team, Richard told Danielle to contact Andrew and next thing you know we created Team Texas, a permanent fixture to Bullrun.

2. Looking back at past Bullrun rallies, what’s the experience that sticks out the most?

We’ve had a lot of fun over the last 6 years doing Bullrun, but there are 2 memorable experiences that are continuously talked about. The first being the 2009 rally when we stopped in Destin, Florida and put 29 people in the back of our Roush F150. We all got caught by the cops and they tried to paddy wagon us all to jail. The second was last year’s rally (2012) when the Dudesons locked us in the closet of their hotel room in Portland, Oregon. We called the front desk from our phones in the closet, security came up, Dudesons got escorted from the hotel.

3. Tell me about the plan for this year. Do you know what you are driving this year, have you forged alliances?

Honestly, this year we didn’t think Bullrun was going to be in the cards for Team Texas, but as usual, the two weeks before the start line is when we do our best work. We have had a lot of support from Bullrun vets, but I wouldn’t say we have an “alliance” this year. As far as a car, we are just going to pull the Team Texas tradition and cross our fingers and hope the car fairy puts one on the line for us.

4. Team Texas drove with Team Wu in the Border Patrol van last year. The idea was to have a lot of fun and stir up trouble. What’s the plan for this year? Will Team Texas be back behind the wheel?

Last year we definitely took a different approach, after 5 years of rallying and never being able to really enjoy certain routes and stops, so we decided to just enjoy ourselves with the Wu’s. We stirred up trouble and it was a nice change, but let’s face it, we are meant to be behind the wheel and this year we will be back behind the wheel in full action.

5. Describe the best moment inside the Wu/Texas van last year.

The best moment was when Danielle gave Bill Wu an Adderall and he was quiet for 3 hours.

6. You’ve been on the Bullrun party wagon since 2008. With this being your 6th Bullrun rally, how are you looking to partake in 2013’s 10-year anniversary? Will you be competing for the Navigator Award or will you be lying low and enjoying the driving?

We never really “compete”, we try and aim at top 10 finishes always, and we do well with that, but in reality our biggest competition is that early morning struggle after that long night of hard partying.

7. What do you consider to be your team’s strongest asset?

Experience. Six years ago our strongest asset was the fact that we are sisters and we know what to expect from each other, now the fact that we have done this for 6 years means that we know what to expect out of the rally.

8. What does your rally preparation involve for the rally? Are you going all out this year? Or are you just along for the ride?

Our preparation consists of a simple method called, procrastinate and panic. We procrastinate until the month before the start line, and then panic until we get everything figured out.

9. If you could give the Bullrun newbies some advice, what would it be?

1. Never underestimate your opponent

2. It’s your first year, you’re not as badass as you think you are.

3. Careless driving is for 16 year- old boys.

4. The hotel room walls are thin, so the person you line up with the next morning can hear everything you said about them last night.

5. The right lane is the slow lane, wave to us when we pass you on the left.

10. With you being one of the more experienced teams on the rally, what are you expecting to get out of this year’s rally?

We’re expecting to get what we get out of every year, the time of our life.

11. What’s the thing you enjoy most about Bullrun?

Seeing everyone come back the next year, these people have watched us grow up; we are all one big dysfunctional family.
