History of the Imp

As the build is currently delayed, I'm going to introduce you guys (and gals) to the car you will (hopefully) be running against.

Its a 2004 Chevrolet Impala LS. When I orig. bught it, it was supposed to be a "stand in" car until I found something I really wanted. It came w/ the N/A (L36) 3.8L V6, which was advertised as 200hp (crank). I opted for the N/A over the 3800 S/C, because I THOUGHT if I stayed n/a I could keep the car stock, boy was I wrong. I held out as long as I could, but a month later I was installing a FWI, t-stat, and Flowmaster 40. Nothing too serious.

Fast forward a few months later, and in goes the cam.. Now we're up to 197/203 at the wheels ;)

After a year and a half trying to get out of the 15s, with no success, it was time to expand my options a little bit. My buddy holds an event every year (www.migmevent.com), most of the guys that show up are F-body guys, so I didnt want to look like a total tool. A few buddies of mine own GTPs, so we went off to Flint to grab some parts. In one weekend (the weekend before M11), we pulled off my top end, and did a top swap w/ a wrecked 1998 Grand Prix GTP. N/A Blower cam in place, and almost no tuning time (rained all that week), she turned a 13.7x @101 (street tires), almost 2 full seconds off my PB of 15.310 @ 88 ;). Keep in mind this car was still a lease at that point.

Another year later I finally swapped cams from the N/A cam to an Intense Racing S1X, but by the time I could get it to the track, I started being plagued by transmission issues. This setup only netted me a 13.5 @105 due to it slipping badly. I had a new goal... Try to destroy the engine and trans and swap in a big build. 40K later the trans went out, the day before our dyno day.

This brings us to present day. Car in the garage, engine torn down and parted out, new engine in pieces, transmission @ Tirple Edge Performance, etc...

So here's a quick overview of whats sitting in boxes/on its way (in boxes) for me to start assembliing next week.

  • 2007 L26 3.8L
  • GenV Eaton M90 Home ported/modded
  • Billet TB
  • Harshaw Racing Heads & LIM
  • Triple Edge Performance street/strip Transmission
  • Custom gournd cam
  • and a few more "toys" , afterall I cant give everything away ;)

After all this work, and seeing what can happen to the car (season I & II), yes, I'm still willing to put my car thru Bullrun hell. Worst case scenario i total the car, and the engine finds a new home in a V6 F-body or Fiero ;)
