Well, incase you all couldnt of guessed, I am a Mustang Junkie. Well after recent conversations with some of my friends, I am thinking of getting another Mustang. I am going to keep the 04, since that is my baby. I am just thinking I need at least one more. You can never have too many of them, just ans Tony......Thinking about one of two, a 99 Cobra or an 87-88 gt t top. Both cars would have to be manual, because I am a bit of a purist (real mustangs have v-8's and unless they are used on the drag strip a lot, need a manual). Problem is I am torn on which one to get. I am limiting my self to a 10k limit. I love the idea of having a 4v 6speed car irs car, however I have had every version of the fox gt except for a t-top. Decisions decisions (oh and I wouldnt be able to leave either one stock......well maybe)
Opinions? Discuss.

I had an 86 t-top mustang, its was alright. Make sure if you get one that the seals are good around the tops otherwise its like driving around in a swimming pool when it rains.
As far a bang for the buck, the 99 cobra would be a sweet ride and the IRS would be worth it.

That is what I was thinking. If I were to get an 87-88 it would be more of a restoration project, since they are one of the more rare of the fox platform cars.....The cobra, it would be nice, the tough part would be what stang to drive.....or do i take the truck

I've always had a sweet spot for the '86 GT. They just look... right. Probably pretty damn tough to find one that hasn't been beat. I'd be much more inclined to be looking for the Cobra. Riff Raff still can't afford one so there are probably lots of good ones out there.

I gotta ask, Only cause I have never been into Mustangs, Why do Mustang guys like them things. In my experience in driving a few of them inthe past, none owned by me. Where's the attraction to what I come to experiance, driving thats goes straight pretty good, but feels like you're in a boat when it comes to corning. Just a question

This is going to sound dumb but they are great cars.
It's that simple when a car treats you well you tend to like that car.

Drive a 99-01 or 03-04 cobra you will change your mind about handling. I converted my 02 GT to the Cobra IRS and what a f'ing difference it made.

Okay, Like I said never really got to drive a newer one, well aside from the one this guy I owned, it was a 95? and handled like a bag o........ 5.0. Was slopy had a real hard time driftin with it. But Iike I said, this only based on my experience. Plus I am not a Ford guy, nor Mopar guy. I love my Chevy's. I was never really into the bodystyles, Hense why i like Camaros I guess.
Whatever American MUSCLE RULES

Well the 95's are a little different. The car was way too heavy for the 5.0. You are not the only person who felt that way about them. For me, it is the feel, the sound, how easy it is to work on them, the aftermarket, and most importantly, for me, when you drive one for a few days, you dont want anything else. I used to be the same way as your Burnz. I was a dihard chevy guy, wanting a camaro and everything. When I was 16 I wanted a v8 rwd car, but also something different, unique...That is when I found it, a 95 Saleen s351 with 4,000 miles (it was a dealer demo) on it......I got an amazing deal on it, and paid most of it in cash (this was in 1995) with my parents helping me finance the rest....It was all over then. I had that car for 6 months, untill a 87 year old lady confused the brake for the gas and rammed me from behind, pushing the car into the intersection just as a large dump truck was crossing.............It was all over for that car....Next vehicle I got was a t-bird sc with a 5 speed, and it would be 10 years till I got another Mustang, but the want and desire was still there....When I finished off the 93 that I bought and resto modded I swore then and there that there would be at least one horse in my garage.....I have had a total of 4 now including that Saleen. I seem to have this desire to get another one every two years, except for the fox vert, I had that for 3 1/2 years (it will be two years today since I got the 04). The fox body cars I have sold at a profit, but there is something about these mod motor cars that I just love, hence why I am going to keep the 04 as well as get another.

I WILL NEVER BE CHANGED! I won't turn to the darkside LOL. as long as you are like them. I unlike you, found Ford to be annoying to work on, changing firingorders on certian years of the same engine. Chevy to me is straight forward and seem to be a whole lot more parts the are interchangable. But i will give you the thumbs up for rear ends. The Ford 9", I guess i kinda like some attributes of Ford. For instance on a quiet knight the sound of a Ford rusting out is almost like the light crackle of a camp fire. LOL

My 95 5.0 was a tank and it handled just fine I had NO problems at SCCA events. No it wasn't the fastest but it did well the cats were gone, (when I bought it) I set the timing set, installed 3.55 gears, a bigger throttle body and a fresh air intake and it could hang just fine. The top end wasn't the greatest but I paid $5000 for it used, drove it 69,000 miles only replace the alternator, a battery and the fuilds and sold it a month ago for $4000. I hope I can do as well with the 03 Mach 1

Oh dont get me wrong, 4th gen f bodys are nice too, with their awesome opti spark, having to be a contortionist to reach the rear plugs, the rear mounted distributor ( I think that is spelled right, I am way too tired to care right now), it makes them great to work on............BTW, you do know that the mighty LSX is a ford baised design....lol
Sorry I had to egg it on after that rust comment lol

LOL, Hey now there isn't that much to the rear plugs. The last ford I did plugs on, now that was hell. the right bank rear plug, I believe, was attrotious to get. I probably would have gotten it out faster if I pulled the engine.
I like the dist in the rear, let me rephrase that. I don't like Fords dist up front. looks kinda goofy and messy, like they forgot about it when the designed the engine.

I tend to send mechanical stuff a shop in town. I will do it on my stuff and of course certain people. But I am a Bodyman and I don't let my boss book stuff like in.
I HATE having greasy stuff in a body shop.
Very bad, yea very very bad!

haha, my buddy had a V6 4th gen. I rolled by one night when he was doing a tune-up with one of those cheap tool sets you buy for like 30 bucks. Took us like 3 or 4 hours to change the plugs and wires.
JMO regarding your original post, i'd go for the 99 cobra. I don't like fox bodies unless they're purpose built race cars.(caged/setup)
Okay, the fox body caged rippin the track looks good. But really anything looks good at that stage.

Well, here is what I decided....Forget the cobra....Many of you know I am in the process of building....well after spending some time on Autotrader and talking to my tuner, I decided to buy a v6 stang body (lust looking for the right one now) and drop the engine into that. Going to build a purpose built car.......details to follow

So why a 6cylinder body, whats the difference?

If you're building a car from teh ground up anyway, may as well start with the cheapest body you can.
V6 and gt have small differences Mainly the rear diff and front subframe you can find a wreck cobra and do a swap it saves you tons

Oh, I see. I figure you would want the v8 chassis for the dif and harder parts, unless you were planning to swap them all over anyways, but I do see your point .

does anyone reproduce that cobra IRS? it seems to me like that would be a popular enough swap for an aftermarket company
Not that I know of, the best thing you can do is get a 5 lug 8.8 out of a gt and go posting on the mustang boards...a lot of times you can do an even up trade

ah cool, just wondering.
I'm guessing you did some shopping before settling on a V6 body. Whats the going value of those year GT's and up to what mileage are they reliable?(as a weekend race car)
With tax returns coming back, i'm thinking i might pick one up if it can be had for a reasonable price.
I woulda said get the foxbody and swap in a Cobra drivtrain. The IRS isn't really that good unless it's built up anyway. it was already comprimised being a rush job. The MN12 Tbird had a better one being they took the time to make it. But If I had another Fox I would love the Cobra IRS. 2.3 and 3.8 cars are less likely to be beat on, hence wanting one for a swap. Theres a good number of Mustangs I want too with a number of different drivtrains. I for one love my 140 and prefer them in foxbodies to V8's.

zq8, I can pick up a shell of one complete minus the engine tand the trans for about 1500. As far as the reliability of the engines, the 4.6 can go up to and past 200,000 miles with just doing maintence, provided you have a good tune in it. However that part dosnt matter, as I am already in the process of building up a new mod motor, with a lot stronger internals (should be good up to 1,000 hp if I wanted to crank the boost up that high). By doing this, I can go a completely different route with the 04 that I have now (havent pulled the stock engine out of it yet, and it was pushing 420 rwhp with a s-trim blower and supporting mods. That sc is long gone, and the proceeds have gone into the new engine's build. I havent decided which mustang I will use if I get selected to be on the show, however I will have the 04 as the one that will be in the vid. The other reason why I am going this way is that the new car will tracked, a lot, and will help me keep the collectibility of the 04 in tact with out having to cut holes into the interior for any kind of cage/battery/ect. Anything that I have removed from the 04, I am keeping incase I decide to bring it right back to stock

LOL, well mine is not a pushrod engine, it is still modular, bu it displaces 5.0l with the 4v cobra heads, eagle rotating assembly, top secret cam specs (4 of them) and a rather evil poweradder, with the possibilities of upwards of 30 psi of total boost.........
