love supercharges the whine of the belt makes me go nuts.turbos build more power but i think superchargers are better allround.

exactly.  Also depends on the motor you're sticking it on.

It depends on what type of supercharger too.  SC's are great for low-end torque, and power all the way through the rpm's.  Turbos have more potential up top, but take a while to kick in. I beleive SC's are a little more parasitic, because they're belt driven... someone please correct me if I'm wrong.  I'm not too fluent with superchargers.

It really depends on the application and what you want out of your car.

You're right. VVt's help with the low end problems.

I think for most driving superchargers are better because they have a much flatter powerband. There' no lag, just more "oomph" all around. With that being said, you can't deny that turbos (when set up properly) have the potential to make huge power... I guess it depends on what kind of driving you do, simplicity of installation, etc.

Plus the blower whine is just addictive... surprises the hell out of people when I stomp on it and they hear the blower!

once i was going to run a friend's s/c VR6 at the stoplight, in my first wrx.  he threw the s/c belt at the launch and went nowhere.

(but i bogged my launch so we were both losers lol)

WOW!

 You really know your stuff!

You are exactly right about all of that! It all boils down to, what do you want for your application?

A roots or screw type blower is great for low end torque but they dont have much to offer up top in the higher RPM's. They usually dont make any noise until you are hard on the throttle. They aslo make a lot of heat.

A centrifugal blower doesnt have much low end grunt but has a BUNCH of top end pull. They sound great too. They probably make the least amount of heat.

A turbo makes great torque and power but they do have some boost lag that you have to deal with (this is usually not an issue at all if you have the right turbo for your application). If you want a sleeper then a turbo is the way to go. They make almost no noise (at idle and cruising) and they also kill a lot of exhaust noise so the car is quiet.

A turbo does have less parasitic loss than a blower but it is by no means "free horsepower".

All of them can work great if you have the right combination for your application.

Thank you :)  I'm a total newb when it comes to SC's, and learning a little more every day... but turbos are my game :)

I prefer CentSC, on a torquey engine. ScrewSCs are great for hoonery, but for all the costs, you may as well just drop in a bigger block.

MPG, & all the weight on top of the engine doesn't add up to a winning combination .. .

I distrust turbos for a lot of reasons, but they make sense for small bore engines & diesels.

If you already have a torquey engine, you get the best of both worlds with a centrifugal SC, linear powerband, excellent mpg/reliability, few cooling issues, & the don't require re-engineering the rotating assembly. They don't shock the rotating assembly like turbos do, and the roots & twin screws.

Plus they're lightweight, & you can mount them lower than a screw blower.

My take... SC is constant power that starts right away. Turbo has potential for a LOT more power. The SC scream is awesome, but there is nothing like the kick of a big turbo kicking in. The blow off valves are also a great sound. (And you can take a turkey call to them lol)

As stated in other posts, It depends on your need. For the show I'd say a sc would be better fitted. Just bring an extra belt.

For the rally I'd go with 2 big fat turbos.

I like the remote turbos in concept, but they're less efficient than regular turbos - & I still don't trust them

belts shouldn't be any more of a problem then the serpentine belt.

I love superchargers.  I have one in my modded Grand Prix GTP.  Instant kick and love the whine.  I'd much rather let the whine do the talking for my car then the exhaust.  Maybe somewhere down the line, I'll slap one on the GTO.

I have a VVT on the harley, instant boost. Makes for a very cool sound between the open pipes and the turbo spooling. For the mustang I'd go centrifiical, mainly because the kit was available as a dealer add on in 1968. The van will eventually get the same since it is allready produced (the reason has an interesting history, Jesse James ran a VW van like mine in the gumball).

I suppose for the show, an SC would do (because its not just about straightline power.) But as its been said, turbo's seem to have much more potential, and when they kick in, you feel it.

For my car, twin turboes are the way to go if you wanna make the big power. Currently there aren't any huge power adding SC's. They pretty much cap out at 400 ish whp. Turboes can take you  much much further. Having twins reduce the lag time too if you set them up properly.

I almost went SC for the Z. Bolt on SC kits require much less internal work to be done, much less in terms of cost, and overall seem safer for the VQ engine. But we all know when you have power you just crave more. So I'd rather make the huge leap to TT's than an incremental step up to TC's and just end up having to turn around and buy the big stuff later on.

Wow, way to spam up your thread count with a lame, not even fully-formed topic.

SC vs Turbo for what? To do what? On what?  With what budget?

Hey!  I'll go start a thread..."I like tires! What do you think of tires?"

....yes, I know I just contributed, but still...

=-=

Coyo- Turbos aren't the time bombs they used to be, as long as their properly cared for, maintained, and run in the fashion designed you'll never have a problem.  So, Don't fear the turbo...

+1 Many vehicles run fine on stock internals with single turboes.

The problems you often hear about are the dumas's who get peeved when someone faster eats their lunch, so they feel the need to turn up the boost. That when you hear the horror stories.

So... why stop at one or the other when you could have both? :p

Hennesy  agrees.  Twin turbo blown FORD GT.  Saw it at Barrett Jackson this year.  Have posted pics of it here before.

My car runs great w/ stock internals... and a bad case of power steering whine!

The only thing I've managed to kill is a stock trans (after 40k of my abuse) and a few wheel hubs ;)
